Hospitality Manager Job Description, Essential Experience and Qualifications

To oversee the day to day running of a restaurant or hotel, implementing the commercial strategy of the establishment while ensuring guest satisfaction. 

The role will depend on the size of establishment and the amount of other management and lower management positions.

  1. Managing personnel:
    Recruitment, induction and training
    Coordinating and supervising staff; providing guidance and support.
    Appraisals and performance management of staff.
    On-going development of skills and knowledge for the FOH and Kitchen staff.
  2. Managing facilities:
    Manage the implementation for any change or upgrade in software systems
    Ensure and implement relevant health and safety regulations.
    Review the uniform requirements and source new suppliers if needed
    Ensure the overall cleanliness and hygiene of establishment.
  3. Managing financial records and legal issues:
    Keeping accounts of income and expenditure
    Ensuring payment of employees
    Keeping track of budgets from the different departments
    Establishing prices
    Dealing with customer complaints
    Ensuring all licences and regulations are complete and uptodate.
  4. Managing administration
    Ensuring records are kept of orders and expenditure for the kitchen and front of house.
    Produce, manage and operate the rotas, checking future planned absences, planning cover and ensuring overtime is provided when necessary

Character

A good hospitality manager should:

  • Love working with other people and have excellent customer service skills.
  • Be patient and diplomatic with good communication.
  • Strong leadership skills including decision making and problem solving.
  • Good time management and organization skills.
  • Responsible, reliable and flexible.
  • Able to remain calm in high pressure environment
  • An eye for detail.

Experience

Industry experience is essential.

Minimum experience would be in customer service or sales as well as knowledge of best practices, hotel/restaurant operations and team management.

Larger establishments will want minimum experience in Hospitality Management.

Qualifications

For a small hotel or restaurant if you haven’t worked up the ranks, you will need some qualifications and training in finance and food service hygiene and management.

For most larger establishments you will need good experience plus secondary school qualifications equivalent to a diploma.

For large hotel or restaurant chains you will normally be required to have a degree in Hospitality Management or similar, which will include subjects such as food and beverage management, hospitality law, cost control and accounting, staff supervision, event marketing and management information systems.  Mostly there is a combination of study and on the job training and internships.

If you want to move into upper management of hotel and restaurant groups, you will normally need to have a masters degree, which will include international tourism with strategic management, sales and marketing, financial planning, human resource management and governance and policy.
